I think I have found my self in an awkward position between a bedroom DJ and a mobile DJ. I have a website business card, and get gig once every couple of weeks. I am basically trying to find a way to get myself more known as a DJ, and hopefully get myself to a position where I am DJing in clubs at some point.

What my main question is I guess, is what are some tips and ideas to really take my DJing from my current position to something bigger?

If you notice, some of the "big time" dj's are actually producers also.

Start making your own music.

How often do you go clubbing?

Reason I ask is that's the way most club DJ's get their club gigs. They go out to the events, support the local scene, talk it up with promoters, owners, other dj's, bartenders, etc and get friendly. Having a web presence and making some of your own edits, remix's and original tracks is a plus also.

I would go clubbing more and most likely land gigs because of my people skills; and I'm not tooting my own horn either. The reason I don't is because of my current work situation does not allow for me to go out and do that.

I would love to go clubbing, but I am not even 18 yet. I heard a lot of people saying that, and the minute I turn 18 i'd go do that. Is that basically the only way that I could get noticed? Here is my soundcloud - http://soundcloud.com/saar-yalov . Let me know if you got any tips as far as technique and stuff! Always looking for constructive criticism. I actually have been producing for a little bit to now, have a lot to learn though, haha.

I'd say if you are a producer then having an online presence is huge. International is the way to go if you want a broad audience. but getting into the local scene is something that you should do man.

Unfortunately I'm not one to talk considering I have stopped clubbing. The Auckland scene isn't the greatest(when there aren't festivals', big acts) tbh.....The only breaks club closed down that my mate worked at for 12 years :(

+1 on what G-Sep said. ya gotta know the peeps. not that hard to do. Over the years I made friends with some interesting DJs, Producers, and Promoters. the Promoter is actually pretty big (Nadia Podolsky) and she's out of Chicago but handles international acts too. just start chatting it up with someone. you never know who they are till you find out. For me, I got to know this crew because I was following a DJ (K.atou)for a few years and became good friends with her. Filmed some of her sets and posted on youtube for her. I know she was grateful. Then i got to know her friends and thats how it works. If I wanted a gig, I would hit them up for sure. Don't have the time at the moment but one day I might ask them for help.

DJ's connected to labels/radio/soundsystems are more likely to get international gigs; the same for DJ/producers. Starting out, I agree that you have to go clubbing, be part of what's happening. DJ's are more believable if they come from a scene; you have to be there to be involved.

Don't be an anti social DJ. The more you be the life of the party, the more people will wanna go out when you go out, and eventually will want you to DJ.

Before you have fans, you have to first make friends.

Club owners and promoters don't go out there to look for DJ's to work, because with the thousands of nobodies who will whore themselves next to nothing for the spotlight; they seldom ever look for talent.

Money talks, prove that your presence brings them money, and they will hire you.

I know this is reverse from how it should be, but its true, you wont be able to showcase talent, until you find away to get in the lime light.
