My co-worker has a set of peavey speakers (SP Series) and a peavey amp (unknown what amp). He has had the speakers for little over a year and went to play them one night and they sounded muffled. Any ideas why?>

My bet would be a blown horn or horn fuse considering nothing else has changed in the system set up since last use.

cost wise, would it be worth to fix? and how would I prevent that for next time?

Horn diaphragm kits are under $50 each but a fuse bulb would only be a few bucks. Either way well worth fixing. Take a listen at home by putting your ear next to the horn, if nothing is coming out then pull your crossover out and check the fuse bulb. This should blow before your horn diaphragm but it doesn't always work that way.

If the bulb is intact try hooking your horn to a different source just to ensure that your crossover didn't blow on you. If still no output then pull the back / diaphragm off of the horn and take a look at the voice coil. If its blow you will be able to smell it and see a small blackened area on the windings.

I put self setting circuit breakers on my horns and bypassed the internal bulb protection by placing a large car audio AGU fuse in its place.

dead tweeter, do your research to find out how much a replacement would cost. Should be cheap and an easy job.
