View Full Version : All songs a dj should have?

Hi,
This may be the wrong forum, but I recently began DJing and accidentally wiped my entire library clean while attempting to transfer to my new computer. It's unrecoverable in the sense that I was transferring the source files and not copies...damn. However, this doesn't bug me too much because about half my library was filler junk from years ago, so it was most likely a blessing in disguise. However, now I only have ~210 songs. My goal by the end of the summer is to have around 1k quality dance floor killers, in good quality.
Could you guys help me with this? What are some songs all DJ's should have? Something you'd hear at a college dance party (ie. Top 40, more well known dubstep, electronica).
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have over 38,000 songs and still get requests for stuff I don't have. You should have whatever is popular with your crowd. In some cases that may be dubstep... in other cases The Macarena.
Maybe start with the DJIntelligence Top 200 http://www.djintelligence.com/pages/mobilebeatprint.asp

Where did you purchase your tracks? Many sites offer re-downloads.
As for songs that all DJs must have, there's no such thing.

^^ indeed, i would say if you're a dj of a specific genre then there are a few classics within that genre that would be "must have's" but no such track for a general dj.

From a technical perspective it's not as easy as you may think to permanently delete files from a hard drive (which is lucky for me as I work in IT Security ;)). With the right tools you could recover some, if not most, of the files.
However, as said, you may be able to re-download them depending upon where you bought them from.

Good argument for buying CD's as your originals, or at least backing up the originals onto Cd's, and external, or whatever.

Exactly. I back up all my music onto externals and dvds for that possibility that everything vanishes

You're welcome.
You can pretty much play a straight Kue set (sad fact, I've seen it done) and have a happy floor of drinking-age plebes. Spice it up with some 3LAU and finds from the major blogs and top10s and they'll think you are the second coming of Christ.
~210 songs is all you need if they're the right ones.

Depends on the DJ, genres, locations
I do many genres and trust me it is a hard life to balance all these genres!
Bhangra: Disk ch kali, Mitran de Boot, Look Lak
Bollywood: Subha hone na de, Saturday Saturday, Tum hi ho bandhu
Top 40: Shake it off, Uptown Funk, I love it
Hip Hop/Rap: Hot N!66A, Tuesday, Birthday
Pop: Timber, Danza Kuduro, Sexy and I know it
Jazz: The way you look tonight, Aint that a kick in the head, New york new york
Oldies: Hold your hand, Ring of fire, Helter skelter
theres so much that after I wrote all ^ I realized I skipped, Garba, Gidha, Telugu, Tamil, Motown, R&B, House, Trap, EDM
So yeah unless your outta your mind trying to appeal to multiple markets like I am, skip out on trying to have it all.
Don't even get me started on the headache I gave myself for Video Mixing these genres now!

For bigroom house, just check out spinnin/revealed etc.'s YT-channel and make sure to listen to the most popular ones (care theyre not the best always)
Also make sure to listen to Mixtapes!

just do a recovery on the hard drive, and purchase another backup hard drive. No such thing as must haves that will fill all intended purposes.

The top 40 number 1's for each year is a good way to build a robust collection again.
