It's basically an EQ that you can't change.

It costs you money to muck up your sound.
Actually, here's a link to how it works if you know a bit about electronics: http://www.radio-flier.com/bbe_data.htm
Nothing fancy, just some analog processing. A bit more than an EQ, but nothing magic. If I owned a studio I might use one for an effect at certain times at certain instruments, but the goal of my sound systems are to faithfully reproduce what is being put into them. I think a bit of time spent reading about how to equalize a system will be a much, much better investment than a snake oil "magic box" suddenly makes everything better.

It's primary function is to use time delay to compensate for poor speaker designs that don't time align the drivers. It's especially useful with typical direct radiator woofer/horn loaded tweeter cabs where the highs lag the lows, resulting in dull sound due to precedence effect. To simplify, it will make a bad speaker sound better, but a good one sound worse.

It's primary function is to separate you from your money, it's secondary function is to take up valuable space in your rack where a proper DSP should be. Another function is to make bad speakers sound so so at moderate volume but like ass at high volume while making good speakers sound bad at any volume, it's final function is as a oversized paper weight once the you figure out you're better off without it.

Depends on your budget, the Alesis 3630 is loved by some and hated by others. I use the DBX1066's. Both are comp/gate/limiters.

Ok so avoid? Whats the best limiter i can get?None. You should get a loudspeaker management system that incorporates the crossover, EQ and limiting in a single unit.
