Hey everybody!

I started "DJing" this christmas on a crappy midi-control a friend gave me. After a while i felt i needed more, so i bought myself a novation twitch - Which im using today..

I can really feel i'm making progress. I'm aware of the fact you always progress quickly in the beginning, but as i get better i feel i get worse ^^ It's probably because i set the standard higher as i progress.

I had all my songs analyzed with RE3 (nice) which really made a difference.

My problem is i'm having a hard time mixing mid-tunes.. It sometimes feels like the songs are rollercoasters.. intro-breakdown-buildup1-climax1-breakdown-buildup2-climax2-outro.
There's either 100% energy, or 0%. This doesn't go for all tunes ofc, but alot, especially the commercial stuff. I try to place the buildup vocals on top of the other songs "climax", catching calmer beat sections in loops, etc.. but most of the time it just feels like i'm playing a mutilated version of the song, alongside the other :P

Is there anyone who can relate to this? :P

Thanks in advance!

Make sure you are phrasing correctly. Each one of those items you mentioned, i.e - intro-breakdown-buildup1-climax1....etc) are phrases. Try this, play song A live till its buildup and phrase/cue up song B (in headphones and beatmatched, of course) so that Song A and B's climax happen at the same time.

What you're gonna do is EQ the songs properly and swap the bass lines gradually and fade out song A and bring in song B just as its climax is gonna hit. All that has to be done before Song A's drop tho.

It's gonna sound rocky at first but see what transition works for you. But it looks like your problem is that you're not phrasing the songs correctly.

Practice, practice, practice...and enjoy! lol

make more loops, you have the gear for it. and keep practicing at home.

yeah the key is matching the phrases up properly so if you want to go climax to climax you have to start the incoming song appropriately after.

if the structures of the songs are the same, lets say every 16 bars is a phrase, and a climax happens at bar 65 then you have to start/cue your incoming song a phrase behind. this will mean that the incoming song gets to bar 65 as the playing song hits bar 81. during the 16 you can eq start your blend or whatever is right for the two songs.

the key is knowing your songs, practice.

you also need to take into consideration what happens after 81 in the playing song and what happens in the phrase starting at 45 in the incoming song to figure out what kinda of blend you are doing.

Yep, phrasematching. It's as simple as that. It's just one of those things you learn while you're learning to beatmatch.

Wow, Thanks for all the quick replies!

I feel i get the idea of phrases etc, but i still find it hard to get parts to work together.. Ie buildup with vocals on top of a climax part will just be messy.. And the songs often clash with sharp sounds etc.. i probably need to work on my eq skills aswell as the rest of my abilities ;p

Anyway.. i recorded 13 mins, hopefully you can give me some advice based upon it - it sure would be greatly appreciated!
