View Full Version : The most hated part of DJing thread

Didn't see it around so I thought I'd make it. What do you most hate about DJing? At a guess requests and music quality are going to list pretty highly.

For me it's working out a highly detailed business plan - not just funding, tax and insurance but part numbers for cable gaurds and specialist power distro cables

What's yours?

For me, it's people knowing me only as "the DJ." Minor gripe, but it still annoys me sometimes. All the time around campus, I'll see people that recognize me from parties that I don't recall at all. If they don't know my name, it's just, "Hey DJ!".

bad setups are my main gripe. mainly the mixer being shit, the dex being fucked mainly pitch problems where even on Technics it makes ya life alot harder, needles jumping mid mix due to wooden flooring or similar & shitty monitors. oh & i also hate it when someone tries to talk to me when im mid mix & wont wait till im finished lol

I hate when kids come up to with a complete list of what should I play for the next two hours. Every single time it's the top 40 shite, along with a pirate CD full of 128 kbps shite or an ipod full of the same 128 kbps.

They try every way to have it their way until you have to explain them in detail the meaning of "no".

awww I hate that too! I get that so often. The ipod. Sometimes I feel I want to tell them, that the jack is broken, sorry.

That's easy, just tell them the volume output of any ipod is too weak to match the DJ's equipment. Which is actually true, works wonders. shouldn't plug a headphones out into a line in anyway, just saying.

Actually getting gigs/trying to convince a venue to a put night on.

You give them decent demos, go down and talk to them, even hand them a business plan at the end of the day they're still like: No.

You've been there before, you know you can play better than other DJs they let play, and you can get a crowd in. But its still: No.

Who you know well works wonders.

Just how it is.

Some things I don't like: -

Annoying drunken dickheads at gigs who want to look through your records, plug a mic in so they can MC etc.

Online competitions where the winner is dictated by the number of public votes which leads to endless "vote for me!" threads.

People on forums who have no passion for what they're doing and who put little effort in.

Bars/clubs that don't take care of their gear. No monitors/broken monitors is just the worst.

DJs that can't record a mix in half-decent quality. No, your 64 Kbps mono MP3 with humming all the way through it and 25 minutes of silence at the end doesn't sound good mate!

People who think scratching is easy, when in reality it's about as hard as learning to play a guitar.

SoundCloud's automatic anti-piracy bullshit - I know why it's there, but it still annoys me.

Every single tune needs to be analyzed by mixed in key

No, it doesn't.

I hate other DJs (not all of them) but the shit ones who think they are amazing.

I hate the "you have to bring x amount of friends" that some promoters have.

Hipster DJs (they generally suck and are only there to attempt to look good in front of a crowd).

People now think electro hou5 is electro and the fact that there are so many people who think this that actual electro doesn't get a word in.

Clubs that finish at 3 or 4.

The amount of utterly gash music that gets released.

I'm only new on this forum but i have a few gripes i've picked up since i started doing small parties:
- People asking 'can you play that Rihannah/Pitbull/Chris Brown/ Flo rida/David Guetta/Will.i.am song??' when i'm in the middle of a set thats not pop shite
- People asking if they can 'have a go on the decks'. Yes, because i'm going to just let you?
- People who stand in the dance area, but don't dance
- People who watch/leer over me whilst i'm doing my thing

On another note, a mate of mine took a picture of this sign whilst she was out.

elitist dj attitudes,

What's worse is those "DJs" that got their equipment for the image more so than the willingness to actually get good with it. There's one guy I saw that has all Pioneer equipment- I have no problem with this other than that he always says "Pioneer is da best" and "You're all just wishing you had this gear" when met with criticism on his mixes.

Normally his style is trainwreck, but what was more cringe worthy was having his EQs all set to max and redlining his mixer. Someone pointed that out to him and he said, "Chill, fool, don't take it serious. I'm just doing this for fun!"

actually one thing that comes to mind , is when i do the first gig in a bar there is often that manger/ess who feels obliged to tell me to turn off the music a few minutes earlier than expected just as a petty attempt to make sure she has the power LOL

Really needing to take a piss and realising you won't be able to go for ages due to the tunes/ crowd. And then when you finally get free some f*cker stopping you on the way to the toilet, or even worst some one stopping the tune or some other f*ck up forcing you to cut short your 1:30 minute piss and having to walk back to the decks through all teh jeering. That guy got some abuse trust me.

Equipment failures forcing you top play different tunes to the one you wanted to play, you've got everyones requests nicely lined up, its going to be great, then a USB stick f*cks up leaving you with 10 seconds till the end of the last track, play whatever is next on the cd, clear floor, ruin playing peoples requests, look sh*t and it wasn't even your fault

BTW half of what's been posted in this thread I actually enjoy, I gets pics taken with girls alla the time

My most hated part of DJing is the perception that it isn't a performance art. Nobody seems to respect that DJs make music better.

Musicians don't like DJs. Most crowds, while they like DJs, want DJs to simply play Top40 songs that they know. In addition, music companies don't make their tracks available to DJs at drastically affordable prices or free.

DJs and DJing should be respected.

So much truth spoken in this thread, i particularly hate venue's that dont keep the equipment on good condition, infact i had a bust up with a pretty big nightclub chain recently after speakig up to them on this, which has resulted in me leaving my friday gig of 2 1/2 years, got a new much much better friday gig starting in 2 weeks, so i've actually got fridays off the next 2 weeks, dont know what to do with myself!

Also have to say needing a piss, or worse, a shit mid set is an absolute nightmare, but i always keep a premixed 80 min mix cd ready to go in case of ermegencys, especially handy if i've had a pre work Nando's (half chicken, extra hot, chips and garlic bread) that likes to make it's way out usually at peak time in the club.
I actually keep a little pack of Andrex 'emergency' toilet roll in my dj bag, always be prepared!

Other DJs who have more of a "I'm a cool guy who makes mixtapes from the virtual dj demo" vibe about them. They make some horrible, non-key matched, 128kbps "youtube rip quality", auto beatsynced "mixtape" where songs fade in and out of each other at random intervals, (most likely because counting 32 beats is too difficult), then who play their pre-recorded mixes with pre-recorded scratching samples (downloaded from torrents most likely) at parties and such.

THAT is what I hate most about DJing.

no thats the best feeling, not the worst! stay up and make a track and get all that left over excitement down into your own music. then after you made the track you will be on another high and be buzzing for another 3-4 hours.

I hate when I'm at a local club (whether I'm playing, or just there to listen, and the promoter gets on the mic and starts hyping the crowd, while the DJ is trying spin. He's yapping all over the tunes, while the DJ is trying to keep the energy level pumping...

Promoters...lazy ass promoters.

Promoters that will book 4-6 DJs with a following so that they don't have to promote and leave to the DJs and their following
Promoters who will not pay you but promise you more "paying gigs next time"
Promoters that require their DJs to sell their tickets and adjust the line up based on tickets sold and not the skill of the DJ

All these promoters should be cut by razor blades all over their body, rolled in salt and have lemon juice poured on them. Same goes for the DJs that supports these assholes.

It's simple:
Club owner provide the venue
Promoters bring people in
DJs entertain the people and keep them there

Having Asperger's, I have an extremely anal-retentive audio-phillic approach to my mixes. I can't stand getting behind the decks, recording a good mix, and then flubbing up just a tiny bit with the EQs at the end. It usually results with me exiting audacity without saving.

Also, constantly being on the search for a mixer with "The perfect sound."

Anyone wanna give me advice concerning this stuff? It'd be appreciated. Maybe I could toss some rep in.

Can't stand this ignorance. They used to say the same thing at the venue I spin at... Anytime there was a fight inside the venue (which was rare), they would automatically attribute it to the music, to the point they said to play nothing that would "get people riled up". Stupid.

There are ways to educate the crowd... especially if you have weekly regulars. Sandwich the new tune between more well-known tunes, and try to play those new tunes more frequently. Usually if you have the trust of a regular crowd already, you should have less of a problem getting new tunes accepted...

playing records last night, the table was so wobbly you even looked at it the wrong way and the record skipped

then I had a boom stand hooked up with a condenser mic and camcorder, another drunk asshole decided to get up on stage and spin the camera around
I reprimanded him, then the dick came back two more times and started touching the mic, I got physical with that dude
I literally threw him off the stage, then he tried getting in my face, I sent him flying 30ft across the room
