Focus on learning how to DJ before buying lights and stuff... And get a proper DJ setup before the lights also :) IMO this is the way

I am really interested in doing lighting for stage and screen but also really enjoy this kind of thing and was hoping that this would be a really good start and be a good hobby being able to do small gigs

Learn how to DJ first, then you might be able to get gigs. And the lights are most likely going to be offered by the venue you are playing at. For mobile DJs it's different, but you need to be able to DJ before starting to do gigs.

DJ lighting and Theatre/Studio lighting is completely different. DJ's use strobes, lasers and basic wash lights. Theatres use analog fresnels, parcans, profile spots and cyc lights as well as sizeable moving heads.

Not really. My career is lighting for movies/TV, but I don't know anything about DJ or club lighting. It's totally different.

no harm in getting a couple of cheap par cans , they go a long way for doing house parties & stuff for your friends
and in these parties you can pick up some good djing experience
but make sure your djing is at the right level for doing those parties first :P
