View Full Version : CDJ-2000 Nexus - First Thoughts

My shiny new CDJ-2000 Nexus's show up today. To quickly summarize my first thoughts:
The Good:
Build quality is very nice. I'd say slightly nicer than the existing 2000's. The platter is a grayish color instead of black, the screen looks great.
The new loop slicer functionality is awesome. Very easy to be creative.
Quantized hot cues are awesome as well. You can't screw them up.
Sync - Love it, hate it, it's there. And after a little experimenting, it works extremely well.
iOS - The app worked straight away. Kind of cool to load your tracks onto your player from your phone. Gimmicky maybe, but neat.
The Bad:
Pioneer changed out the power connector. For eons, all the CDJ's used the same figure 8 shaped power cords. No more, they switched to D-Sub (or whatever they call it, PC power cord, like on the DJM's). These are easier to find replacements for, but I had to take apart a good chunk of my booth to put in new cables.
Features are grayed out or missing from the menus that were there in the 2000 MK1
TRAKTOR AND SERATO HID DO NOT WORK. AT ALL. NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT.
iOS app is neat, but there's no security. If someone is on your network, they can reach your CDJ's.
That's all I have for now.
Yeah I was bummed out about how HID doesn't work too. As I was telling Brichi, I didn't buy these decks for HID, but I had an unfinished podcast in Traktor that I would have liked to finish in Traktor. Oh well, not a big deal.
I'll add a few points here too:
- The platters feel a lot smoother than the CDJ 2000 even at higher tension.
- Slip mode is really great, but anybody who has 900s knows this already.
- The waveform is extremely easy to read, even having come from Traktor.
- The iPhone connector works well for charging my phone :P
- Unlike Ryan Ruel I really like the new power cords. I was annoyed with the ones that came with the CDJ 2000 because I thought they felt flimsy and cheap. These new ones feel rugged.
- The USB port is much more convenient.

yes but on you Nexus you have to select the ios device to complete the connection
My thoughts:
-change in power sucks, I like being able to easily swap between the different decks and now I cannot without keeping extra power cords on me now
wireless music play is gimmicky and very buggy, hopefully they fix the bugs for people who choose to use them
-auto load of hot starts is great, but definitely not as fast as most people would like
-you are forced to have an album art column on the main screen when scrolling, such a waste for people like me who dont use any album art, no option to get rid of the column :(
other then that, they are worth the upgrade for RB users, I love the decks, they just need to knock out some bugs and customize some menus, oh and yes, the usb port is great to charge my phone!! :)

Yes, all said I'm happy with the upgrade.
I think the hid support will be ironed out. I just hope very quickly. We don't need another hid-gate with NI.

Hey, I have a question for you guys. How do I get the CDJ to load my hot cues that I have stored in recordbox? For some reason when I open a track, even if I have hot cues assigned, the buttons aren't illuminated.

I'm sure they will. I think it might be on NIs end because it's another player or something.

Nice review, I want them but I'm gonna keep my 1000mk3s until the wheels fall off.. besides I use control discs with TS so those players add hardly any additional features for my set-up.

Can you really say that is bad though, I guess it was only bad for you because of your booth.
I prefer the new cords.

I don't mind the cords either. But for example, when I play out, the club I play at has CDJ-1000 MK3's. Now when I go, I need to snake in power cords in their booth too. Before I could just swap out the players in 2 seconds.
They have 2000's upstairs as well. So now when they upgrade or shift around players, they have to deal with two cord types as well...
I mean, I wish Pioneer had used D style cords all along. They are cheap and everywhere.

Totally agree with that, I do not get why they didn't.
Also, on my 850, it is a 2 pin plug to 3 pin adapter (came in the box), I've no idea why.
Is there a different input/output wattage of sorts with different cables?

It's probably more related to grounding and 120/240V comparability, that's my guess.

So I got around to actually playing on them last night for a few hours. They are in fact beasts.
Before I started, I went into RekordBox and checked the beat grids. I had never used that feature before (I guess it's been there all along?). It's super easy, and in most cases they were already correct or needed a simple adjustment.
With this all done, the quantize features work perfect. Hot cues, can't screw them up. Loops, perfect (the loop slicer on the touch bar rocks). Beat sync, love it or hate it, works amazingly well. Hit sync (the "master" deck kind of follows back and forth between the decks), then hit play. It perfectly syncs the pitch values, you can then use the platter just as you normally would to line them up perfect. So if your grid isn't even spot on, as long as the pitch is correct you can "fix" any errors. On the master deck, if say the pitch is 125 (master), if the slider for some reason were all the way up or down, they implemented a feature similar to the Traktor S4. You physically move the pitch control until it matches the actual playing pitch, and only then at that point does it activate so you can change the master pitch. Neat!
Now the bad... I was playing directly off Rekordbox, and it crashed once. The emergency loop in the player took over. On my Mac, I could NOT restart RekordBox. The application would bounce in the dock, and not open. I went into the terminal and killed all the processes, still wouldn't open. I had to reboot my laptop. I would probably never use this in a club setting anyway (just burn a USB stick or SD card), but come on, at least if it crashes you should be able to re-open the application.

I have a strong urge to say "Welcome to Traktor for the last 2 years" (More than 2, technically, but the last versions of Traktor are spot on when dealing with beat grids. Very precise things to work with!)
Recordbox failed you eh? I've had Traktor fail me a total of 2 times in ... well many years. (Used it since Traktor 1 for Final Scratch) Curious about your future experiences with Recordbox. Sorry to hear this happened Ryan, hopefully things get sorted out.
As an outsider, seeing you guys paying CRAZY money for (what seems to be) killer decks... only to come in here and have "CONS" that seem pretty shitty, I feel for you guys. :( A solid CD player shouldn't be over a grand, that's just insane...but if a product sells that high, maybe the product should have been MORE SOLID before they released the items to the public?

Meh, that's technology for you. The more and more functionality you add, the more difficult it is to get perfect.
So far, the players by themselves (without external software) are perfect firmware wise.
Traktor has been stable for me too. Although it did crash for the first time in years recently after I put 2.5 on.

I had Rekordbox crash on me when I was loading tracks onto a USB drive. I never planned on using Rekordbox with my laptop because the whole reason I got these was to eliminate the need for one. While I do think Pioneer should have been on the ball with this, I never had issues with Rekordbox 1.6.2 circa CDJ 2000. I think they may have been a little rushed to get this version out. The only thing I wish Rekordbox had was waveforms like Traktor.

While I do agree that you won't lose on any CDJ 2000 Nexus functionality while using Traktor (6 year Traktor user here), it's important to understand that this is the first piece of standalone hardware that can compete with a developed piece of software.

1. The new power cables are fine, I stated I like them, just not having to change them out. And I've already heard complaints from some other DJ's on this, it's an inconvenience. The argument for better sound quality is ridiculous.
2. How can you ensure network security in a club environment with multiple DJ's? With rekordbox alone, you are on a secure wired network. By adding in a wireless AP to the mix, you now are opening up the network. It's not a huge problem, but it would have been nice to do something like a pairing.
The Traktor and Serato HID issue IS already a problem. I've read about a venue who already swapped out their decks, and existing functionality stopped working. It would have been nice for at least Pioneer to have acknowledge that support was pending. It IS a problem, at least for now.
Sorry but I had to sign up to reply to this. What nonsense from the original poster...
"The Bad:

>>>iOS app is neat, but there's no security. If someone is on your network, they can reach your CDJ's."
1) The power cable has been changed for GOOD REASON in order to provide more contact and improve sound quality. Quote: "A new IEC connection allows a more professional power connection for improved sound quality"
2) The rekordbox app (not just on Apple!) doesn't need security! Your network IS your security. Improve your WIFI standards to WPA2 AES and you'll be fine. Also - you have to accept the connection on the CDJ.
Plus support for Serato etc will come. You basically have NO bad points to mention about these decks, correct? :-/
Yeah, Traktor and Serato do not work at all at the moment.
Edit: do you think they may have done that intentionally to move people over to rekordbox? If that's their plan, it worked for me.
Ryan Ruel
10-01-2012, 01:10 PM
If you can explain how a better power connection makes a digital audio player, with SPDIF out output bits a little more "1" ish and "0" ish then you should get a job in selling snake oil :) I'm sure the change was more due to compliance with international power standards.
Pioneer has now acknowledged officially that the CDJ-2000 Nexus support of HID for Traktor and Serato is planned but not yet completed. It is now on their website under the FAQ section.
Hey Ryan (and other 2000 nexus owners), is the auto cue feature in rekordbox what loads hot cues automatically? If so, for some reason my decks won't do it.

I think so, there's a setting for "prepare hot cue auto load" in the Rekkordbox preferences.
I know that holding the auto-cue on the player itself has always caused it to set the very first cue point to where it detected the beginning of the music.
The Cue/Loop call buttons were always there for play CD's with a secondary memory card to read in the store cued points from the memory card, try those as well.

make sure you enable the "hot cue" column in RB and then check off the songs you want to auto load,

The right idea but way too pricey.
Hey Ryan or Brichi, I have another question. Is there a way to make it so that the CDJ doesn't load the next track when the current track ends? Similarly, is there a way to make it so that if I backtrack in a song before the first beat that it doesn't load the previous track?

Auto-cue should stop the auto-load of the next and previous track. Did you enable that on the player?
Press and hold the button named auto-cue on the player until it's lighted in the display. It will remain on even after you power cycle the unit.

Hello!
I have some questions about CDJ-2000 Nexus
1) Does it come with country-customised power unit ? I mean, 110 v for items sold in the USA, and 220 v for items sold in Europe ?
Or it has a 110\220 power unit, which can work anywhere.
2) Can 'wireless' be turned off on the unit ?
I just do not want the unit to produce any radiowaves when I only play CDs. Also I do not want anyone trying to hack the unit remotely =)
3) I have never played on CDJ-900, but I've read complains that it loads tracks from Audio CD more slowly then other Pioneer CDJs.
Have anyone been displeased with such behaviour of his Nexus unit ?
4) Are there any notable BUGS in the unit now, which do annoy you much ?
I'm going to start using the unit by playing from disks (Audio CD, MP3 CD) and USB, going to use Loop functions
I do not have any Apple stuff, so not a problem for me if any issues with that... Will use Windows XP\Vista\7 computers to connect the unit
brichi
01-25-2013, 09:35 AM
1. I believe they are set based on where you purchase the unit
2. there is no built in wireless, it needs to be added if you want to use that feature via a wireless router or access point
3. never had an issue with cd's
4. decks were buggy but the latest 1.06 update took care of a lot, now it's just some menu issues and very minor bugs, nothing big though, they are finally great decks, Have owned them since day of release so let me know if you have any further questions
Ryan Ruel
01-25-2013, 09:38 AM
1. Not that I know of, the 2000's weren't multi-voltage, I don't think the Nexus's are either. Specs show either 120V OR 240V depending on if you look at Europe vs. US sites. They did switch the power cords to use the standard PC style power cords (like the DJM's use).
2. There is no wireless on the CDJ-2000 Nexus's. In order to use the "wireless features" they advertise, you need to hook into an existing network via ethernet, and bridge to WiFi using an access point (usually built into your router).
3. They do load the waveforms really slowly from Audio CD's. I think they render at a higher quality than the old CDJ-1000's/800's, but it's definitely SLOW especially given the technology at hand. Of course if you use USB/SD cards with rekordbox analyzed files, the waveforms load instantly.
4. I don't notice any bugs, but I think there are some remaining issues for some.
testuser01

brichi , Ryan Ruel - thank you for your explanations!
1) 'They do load the waveforms really slowly from Audio CD's' - have you noticed, what is the avarage time to build a waveform for a 4 minutes track ? For 6 minutes track ?
For the 1st track on the CD ? For the last track on CD ?
If you have made such tests \ observations - please share your results.
2) If I want to start playing a track immediately, is there a button to cancel the waveform ? Some quick on/off button like for 'vinyl mode' and 'master tempo' ?
3) Did I get it right, that the unit can play WAV/AIFF (and MP3) from all possible sources - CD-ROMs, DVDs, USB (flash or external hard drive) ?
4) Can the unit play audio (PCM or AC-3) from DVD-Video disks (such as music video compilations on DVD) ?
5) What audio outputs are available ? RCA Line out ? SPDIF ?
6) Can the unit play Serato control CDs (and control Serato Scratch Live) ?
7) If it's forbidden in forums, maybe in a private message you can tell the cheapest (and safe) places to order European (220 v) versions with worldwide shipping ? For example, are there any cheap shops in Finland ?

I would say in the 30s-60s range.

You don't need to cancel the waveform building, you can start playing the track immediately, it builds the waveform in the backgroud.

Yup.
4) Can the unit play audio (PCM or AC-3) from DVD-Video disks (such as music video compilations on DVD) ?
Nope.
5) What audio outputs are available ? RCA Line out ? SPDIF ?
Yup.
6) Can the unit play Serato control CDs (and control Serato Scratch Live) ?
Absolutely (you can even rip timecode and play it off a USB/SD card). Of course even better is that you can use HID mode with USB to control Serato and Traktor directly, without any timecode (though sometimes you might want to use timecode).

only thing thats wrong here is serato is not supported via HID yet on the nexus decks, timecode signal will be needed for now, you can rip the cd to a flash drive or download the wave right from the serato site
also, I use cd's at times and the waveform loads a lot quicker then 30 seconds on about 5-6 minute tracks

Wow, it's still not supported? Stinky!
I don't know, I had a friend over who was playing on CD's, it seemed to take forever to load the waveforms. This is of course for new tracks... once they are analyzed the player will store the waveform like on the old CDJ's, correct?

yup, people are complaining, still not supported
the wave will save if you have a usb drive plugged in or sd card. Was it a real audio cd or did he have mp3's on a cd, mp3's on a cd will take longer to build, the regular audio cd goes pretty fast

I don't know actually. It may very well have been MP3 files on a CD/DVD.
